Unforgettable Ceremonies, and Receptions that are just One Big Party - How do they Happen?

Some thoughts from a marriage celebrant and wedding dj…

I've been a marriage celebrant and wedding DJ for around 4 years now, and in that time I've met so many different couples from all walks of life. The variety of people I meet and get to know every week is easily one of my favourite things about being a marriage celebrant and wedding DJ. I've got a pretty wide range of tastes, opinions and interests, and it's always awesome to meet someone I wouldn't have otherwise crossed paths with who I share something with or better yet, someone who introduces me to something totally new!

But my time in this line of work has definitely made me realise there are certain things that make it so much more likely that a ceremony is going to take both the couple and the audience on a journey, and things that make a heaving dancefloor inevitable.

As a marriage celebrant, my job is to craft and tell stories that bring your memories and experiences to life for the most important moment of your most important day. When couples have really cool stories from their lives together that I can retell, that's obviously great! But it's also about the part of a relationship that takes the everyday and mundane and turns it into something special - the story behind a stupid nickname, a bad habit you've formed together, something that's forgettable to most but makes you guys piss yourselves every time you think of it. Cool stories are cool, but the real story is YOU GUYS, and as your wedding celebrant I wanna describe that indefinable quality that makes your thing the best thing. The more I can really get to know you both, the harder your ceremony is going to hit everyone (including you).

As a wedding DJ, it's a little more simple, but no less important. I want to play for crowds who are good at having a good time and for me, that means DANCING. While I've got my own preferences as a wedding DJ, the type of music that makes you want to dance isn't so important, what's important is that music makes you wanna dance! It’s so much less fun when people only dance when their song comes on, or only dance for 5 minutes 'as a joke', then go sit down again. People often think they're being a pain when they come up and request a tune - but nothing could be further than the truth, because I want to be a wedding DJ at weddings where people know what they want to hear, and aren't afraid to ask! I love it when couples send me a huge list of requests, because it means they care about music and want to enjoy the music at their wedding as much as possible - and that's what I wanna see as a wedding DJ!
