My 5 Favourite things about being a Wedding DJ

  1. The differences between a wedding DJ and… every other kind of DJ

I thought I knew a lot about music when I was just playing clubs, but being a wedding DJ is a different world. Not just delving into genres I knew little about, or nothing at all, but finding a love for music I didn't know existed or always thought I didn't like! My favourites are still my favourites, but being a wedding DJ has added to that list in a huge way and reignited my love for music.

  2. The people you meet as a wedding DJ

If you work with the same people all the time, it's easy to forget how wide a range of awesome and interesting people are out there in Perth and WA. They say "your vibe attracts your tribe" and nothing has demonstrated that for me more than my years as a wedding DJ. I've met couples and families from every walk of life and while they've all got their own unique thing going on, we always have a connection and rapport that's made every wedding fun from start to finish.

  3. And the way those people changed my relationship to music

Much of the music I play as wedding DJ isn't stuff I often throw on at home or in the car. But when I play it at just the right time and watch the looks on people's faces and the way they dance, I understand more about that tune, that style, and what makes it great. Music's subjective and personal, and it's usually really hard to properly describe what it is about a particular song that makes you love it. But when they hear it on a dancefloor with all their favourite people, they don't need to tell you why they love it - because they can just show you.

  4. The places I get to see as a wedding DJ

The venue is almost always the first thing people lock in for their wedding, and there's a good reason for that - everyone wants the memories of most important day to be somewhere beautiful, comfortable, and atmospheric. And that means something different to everyone, sometimes it's a winery, a well-decorated 'blank canvas' or a spot by the water. It's a privilege to always be somewhere different but for that place to always be decorated with love and care by awesome vendors, guided by couples doing everything they can to create the perfect day.

  5. Weddings are fun.
